What started almost a year ago with the launch of the limited Commuter:ON e-bikes will continue in 2023 with the new Commuter:ON 7 — a minimalist, practical and lightweight urban e-bike equipped with the Fazua Ride 60 drive system.
Thanks to the low total weight of only 4.26 kg, this drive is made for lightweight e-bikes and can still boast decent performance data: the compact mid-motor offers a torque of 60 Nm and the battery — which can be removed in these bikes — has a capacity of 430 Wh. By dispensing with a classic display, the already barely visible e-drive is integrated even more inconspicuously in the bike; only a thumb button on the handlebar with LED display indicates the Fazua motor, and there is also a USB-C socket — for charging a smartphone, for example. A smartphone can be attached to the handlebars as an option, and Fazua’s matching app then displays various information about the ride and offers additional setting options for the motor’s three riding modes.
These are new Canyon Commuter:ON ebikes for 2023
As a successor to the Commuter:ON 8 LTD from last year, Canyon now launches the new and more affordable Commuter:ON 7. This does without some high-end features such as the braking system integrated into the handlebars, instead a conventional braking system is installed here. Nevertheless, the handlebar and stem continue to form a unit, where cables and lines are routed directly into the frame — which allows for a minimalist look.
A 12-speed Shimano XT derailleur is also installed on the Commuter:ON 7 (with an enormous 10-51 cassette), as is a lighting system with a LightSKIN headlight and Supernova rear light. The weight of the new models is said to be 18.26 kg, which is really good for a fully equipped mid-engine bike. For high everyday comfort, the Commuter:ON 7 also rolls on 40 mm wide tires in 27.5 inch format, from wetness protect sturdy aluminum mudguards. The rear rack, which can carry a load of up to 15 kg, also ensures a high practical value.
The new Commuter:ON 7 is available in different sizes and colors per frame variant: In the version with diamond frame, sizes M to XL are available in dark Stealth and light Ivory. The Mid-Step model with a trapezoidal frame is available in sizes S to L in Stealth and Minted Green. Both versions cost 3,299 euros.
Conclusion
With the new Commuter:ON 7 Canyon shows how a lightweight and stylish e-bike with a sufficiently powerful mid-motor can look. If you also consider the fair price of 3,299 euros that this bike should be quite a success! The only downer is that Canyon does not yet offer a model variant of the Commuter:ON with hub gears and belt drive. Who can do without the all-weather equipment, by the way, can also take a look at the new Roadlite:ON e-bikes!
