In addition to the lightweight e-bike news of the Commuter:ON and Roadlite:ON series, Canyon has also introduced its new line-up of electric urban bikes with Bosch’s drive system. This traditionally includes the spectacular carbon bike Precede:ON CF (which we already had here in the test) and the somewhat newer and more affordable Precede:ON AL with aluminum frame. On the latter is our attention, because from this series some models are now equipped with the new Bosch Smart System!

New models with Bosch Smart System

As in the past, the new vintage is also divided into three model variants: the Precede:ON 5 marks the most affordable entry, followed by the better with better equipped Precede:ON 6 with derailleur gears and the Precede:ON 7 with belt drive and hub gears.

Thanks to the Performance Line motor, the Precede:ON 6 and Precede:ON 7 bikes now have the new Smart System from Bosch. Meaning: they are wirelessly compatible with Bosch’s eBike Flow app, which can be run on your smartphone. Thus, advanced functions such as navigation, activity tracking and wireless updates can be used, and there is also a clever anti-theft protection. This turns the smartphone into a digital key that can be used to disable motor assistance after the ride. In line with this consistent inclusion of the smartphone, neither bike has a classic display; instead, there is a compact thumb button on the handlebar (Bosch Mini Remote) and an elongated control unit on the top tube that also provides information about the remaining battery capacity (Bosch System Controller). For bikes with Bosch drive, this is thus the most inconspicuous integration of the electrical components to date.

In comparison, the Precede:ON 5 comes with the familiar Active Line Plus drive and a fixed Purion display on the handlebars, which does not offer any smart features — but still provides all the relevant basic functions for cycling at any time and uncomplicated.

Common to all variants is the new selection of colors, which now consists entirely monochrome of a metallic light Moon Silver and the dark Anchor Grey. Thus, the bikes are available with a diamond frame in three sizes and a step-through frame in four sizes. A special feature is the difference in battery capacity, depending on the frame size: the models up to frame size M come with a 500 Wh battery and are 200 euros cheaper than the models in frame sizes L to XL – because there is a 625 Wh strong battery installed.

The rest of the equipment also meets the requirements of a solid everyday bike: on the 27.5″ large rims are mounted fat Schwalbe G-One Allround tires with 57 mm width. Matching wide aluminum mudguards are installed and a sturdy rear rack, which is compatible with the QL3.1 system and can be loaded up to a maximum of 25 kg. In addition, all bikes have a permanently installed lighting system and can be expanded with a front rack and matching baskets.

Conclusion

With solid technology and robust design, the new Precede:ON AL bikes appeal in particular to pragmatists who are looking for a reliable e-bike for everyday use — and who value a good price-performance ratio. It is therefore gratifying to see that these characteristics continue to hold true even after the integration of the new Smart System from Bosch!
