For Moustache, the Lundi is far more than just one of many e-bikes in its range. It was with this model that the French brand first made its debut – thereby laying the foundations for its development into a recognised e-bike manufacturer. Since then, this distinctive city bike has been a mainstay of the range and has been repeatedly updated with the latest technical features over the years. Now the next generation is here, and it marks a rather interesting step forward: visually, the Lundi, with its significantly slimmer frame, is moving closer to its roots, whilst technically there are quite a few new features.
A first for the Hub Line
The drive system plays the biggest part in the bike’s new look. For the first time, Moustache is using the new Bosch Hub Line hub motor, which is fitted to the rear wheel with 45 Nm of torque and takes up significantly less space in the frame compared to a traditional mid-drive motor. To complement this, the compact PowerTube battery, with a capacity of 360 Wh, is completely concealed within the slim down tube. Handy: despite its sleek integration, the battery remains removable and can therefore be conveniently charged at home, separate from the bike. At the same time, the new drive system offers a further advantage: depending on the model, the new Lundi is said to be up to 3.5 kilograms lighter than its predecessor, according to the manufacturer.
The minimalist approach is taken even further in the new single-speed version. For the first time, the Lundi is available without any derailleurs at all, but with a Gates belt drive instead. This combination can be an interesting alternative, particularly for predominantly flat routes and classic city cycling – it’s simple in design, quiet and requires little maintenance. On the other hand, for those who frequently ride uphill or wish to retain more flexibility in their gear ratios, the Lundi is also available with a classic derailleur from Shimano’s Cues series, featuring nine gears.
Typical Lundi
As much as the drivetrain has changed, the rest of the bike feels just as familiar. First and foremost, of course, the characteristic Moustache handlebars remain – which not only define the bike’s distinctive silhouette but also ensure the familiar upright and relaxed riding position. Added to this are the headlight, integrated directly into the head tube, and the rigid fork, whose shape blends almost seamlessly into the frame’s lines.
In terms of features, too, the Lundi remains a city bike consistently tailored to everyday use. Sturdy mudguards are just as much a part of the overall package as the MIK HD luggage rack, to which bags, boxes or even a child seat can be attached. The rear light is elegantly integrated into the rear mudguard, a suspension seat post provides extra comfort, and, in addition to a bike stand, a frame lock on the rear wheel is even included as standard.
At 60 millimetres, the tyres on the 27.5-inch wheels are also exceptionally wide – in keeping with the bike’s comfort-oriented character and certainly helpful on poor-quality tarmac or cobblestones. Braking is provided by Shimano hydraulic disc brakes.
More choice with the frame
Another new feature is less obvious, but is likely to be quite relevant in everyday use. Whilst the previous Lundi was only available in one frame size, there are now two variants on offer. XS/S is aimed at riders between approximately 155 and 165 centimetres in height, whilst M/L, according to Moustache, covers a significantly wider range from 162 to 190 centimetres. The maximum permissible weight is a comparatively high 150 kilograms; the bike itself is said to weigh between 23.5 and 24.1 kg, depending on the specification.
If you’d like to tailor the Lundi more closely to your own daily routine, there’s also a range of suitable accessories available. These include a MIK-compatible front luggage rack with its own headlight, a rear wheel cover and a mount for a U-lock. If you’d like additional smart features, you can fit the Lundi with Bosch’s ConnectModule: amongst other things, this adds an alarm function and GPS tracking, whilst the equally compatible SmartphoneGrip allows you to attach your phone to the handlebars and charge it wirelessly at the same time.
Launch Edition to mark the release
To mark the market launch, Moustache is bundling the aforementioned extras in a Launch Edition limited to 270 units. It comes in the exclusive Chromatic Blue paint finish with reflective stickers and includes the optional accessories as standard. It also features a 10-speed gear system, whilst the standard version with derailleur gears offers nine speeds.
Colourful, new and affordable
The new Lundi 27 also sets a positive trend when it comes to colours and price. You can choose from Glossy Avocado, Matt Lavender, Glossy Stone Grey and Glossy Black – a delightfully colourful and varied range!
And the price also makes the new Lundi an attractive prospect: both the single-speed version with a Gates belt drive and the model with a 9-speed derailleur cost 2,399 euros, whilst the more extensively equipped Launch Edition is priced at 2,899 euros. This means that the Lundi is not only sleeker, lighter and fundamentally modernised from a technical perspective, but also remains pleasantly down-to-earth in terms of price. Visually closer to its roots, yet technically firmly in the present – back to the future, in fact!
