Schindelhauer Neo: A new compact urban bike in three versions

With its new Neo, Schindelhauer is expanding its range with a new compact bike that brings the Berlin-based brand’s signature design language to an agile 20-inch format for the first time. The new model range is aimed at urban cyclists looking for a space-saving bike – without compromising on riding enjoyment, everyday practicality or a distinctive look. Schindelhauer has taken an interesting approach here: instead of a single model, there are three variants to choose from, catering to different needs.

From the ThinBike to the Neo

Incidentally, the concept of a compact bike is not entirely new to Schindelhauer. Back in 2013, the brand already had an unusual city bike in its range: the ThinBike. At the time, Schindelhauer opted for 24-inch wheels and a folding mechanism on the handlebars and pedals, which made the bike particularly space-saving to store. Although the new Neo does not feature such a folding design, it scores points with an even more compact format, modern technology and a significantly wider range of models.

Compact dimensions, wide range of use

The Neo’s frame is based on the ‘one size fits most’ principle and is designed to suit riders between 158 and 192 centimetres tall. This means there is no need to choose between different frame sizes. Schindelhauer sees the Neo as a versatile companion for everyday urban life, with a focus on compact dimensions and straightforward handling.

Visually, the brand remains true to itself: clean lines, seamlessly integrated technology and a tidy appearance characterise all three versions. When it comes to components, too, the focus is on tried-and-tested solutions. As is always the case with Schindelhauer, the low-maintenance Gates belt drive comes as standard on all models. Also fitted as standard is the integrated LightSKIN lighting system, whose light elements are discreetly integrated. The compact headlight is unusually positioned beneath the fork crown, whilst the rear light is almost invisible within the seatpost – yet when switched on, it stands out all the more with a long strip of light!

The right model for every style of cycling

The entry-level Neo model is aimed at purists: as a single-speed bike in the colour Edelweiss, it does away with gear shifting and focuses instead on keeping the weight as low as possible. Weighing in at just 9.8 kilograms, it is exceptionally light and is likely to really come into its own on short to medium-length urban journeys. Mudguards, a rack or a front basket can be fitted as required. The price is 1,995 euros.

The Neo Classic is a little more suited to everyday use. This model features an eight-speed Shimano Alfine hub gear system and higher handlebars, which allow for a more upright riding position. Mudguards are also included as standard; along with the seat post and handlebars, their polished silver finish gives the bike a slightly more classic look. The model is therefore aimed at cyclists who regularly cover longer distances or ride in hilly terrain. The Neo Classic weighs 12.4 kg, is available in Deep Violet and Titanium Grey, and costs 2,495 euros.

At the top of the range is the Neo Electric. Here, Schindelhauer combines the compact frame with the Mahle XS drive system. The X30 hub motor in the rear wheel delivers up to 45 Nm of torque and is powered by the removable battery – although the capacity of 171 Wh is certainly modest. Gear selection is handled by a Pinions bottom bracket gearbox from the C-Line series with six gears. The brushed aluminium finish of the Neo Electric emphasises the model’s technical character. It weighs 16 kg and is priced at 4,395 euros.

All Neo models share the ability to be customised. Specially designed accessories such as a rear rack, front basket or a Klickfix adapter significantly expand the bike’s versatility and are designed to transform this compact city bike into a practical everyday vehicle when needed.
