More than just detail improvements?

VanMoof S6: New generation of smart bikes wants to impress with a familiar concept

With the launch of the new S6 series, VanMoof is bringing a new model onto the market for the first time since the company was reorganised in the wake of financial difficulties. The S6 series thus marks an important step in the reorganisation of the brand. Instead of radical innovations, VanMoof is focussing on a careful further development of its well-known e-bike philosophy — with a focus on functionality and reliability.

New generation: Vanmoof S6 Open and S6

The series includes the classic VanMoof S6 model as well as a more compact version with a low entry, which is now called the ‘S6 Open’. It is worth noting that VanMoof is thus deviating from the previous naming logic — Instead of calling it an ‘A6’, as was the case with the previous A5 model, the smaller model now simply has a new name suffix.

Connection with app and anti-theft system

VanMoof also relies on the in-depth connection between the smartphone app and the bike: the VanMoof app should allow the riding behaviour to be adjusted in just a few seconds. Turn-by-turn navigation is to be added free of charge in the course of the year. Improvements have also been made to anti-theft protection: the tried-and-tested anti-theft system has been supplemented by even more precise location tracking. In addition to the extensive sensor technology comprising Bluetooth, NFC, GNSS, LTE-M and NB-IoT, there is also Apple Find My integration, which connects the bike directly to the Apple network and can therefore theoretically be located at any time. If the bike is stolen, the optional Theft Proof Service will try to track it down again. If this is unsuccessful, VanMoof will send you a new bike.

Familiar drive concept with attention to detail

Technically, the S6 follows the principle of its predecessors: a front hub motor provides the support, while a hub gear is located in the rear wheel — combined with a classic bicycle chain. Automatic gears, hydraulic disc brakes and an integrated lighting system are still part of the typical VanMoof equipment.

In detail, the new model offers the following specifications: The front hub motor has an output of 250 W and continues to deliver a torque of up to 68 Nm in boost mode. It is controlled via a torque sensor which, in combination with four selectable support levels, is intended to ensure the most natural riding dynamics possible. The energy comes from a customised Panasonic battery with a capacity of 487 Wh, which is still permanently installed in the frame of the bike. The bike must therefore be brought close to the charger for charging.

The so-called Gen 6 Kick Lock, which has an automatically retractable locking bolt, has been improved. This allows the rear wheel of the bike to be locked mechanically so that it cannot simply be pushed away in the event of theft. In addition, VanMoof now relies on a so-called ‘AutoHub’ hub gear with three gears. It’s a mechanical-automatic gearstick that changes gear depending on the speed – completely without electronics. This type of automatic system is now regarded as mature and low-maintenance — a pragmatic step towards suitability for everyday use.

Options, sizes and colours

As an option, VanMoof offers a front carrier system for the S6 with a load capacity of up to 10 kg. An elasticated strap is used to secure the load, and the integrated front light is mounted on a fixed bracket. Two luggage carriers are available for the rear area: one with a load capacity of 15 kg and a particularly robust ‘HD’ carrier with a load capacity of up to 27 kg. It is interesting to note that all racks are also compatible with the 5-series — a clear indication that nothing fundamental has changed in the frame of the new model. At least the weld seams are now smooth, which gives the bike a much more premium look.

The frame of the S6 is designed for people between 165-210 cm tall and the total weight of the bike is 23.5 kg. The S6 Open is aimed at people 155-200 cm tall and weighs 22.5 kg. The wheel sizes also differ: 27.5 inches for the S6, 24 inches for the S6 Open.

At launch, both models are available in three matt colours: Electric Blue, Drift Black and Pearl Mint.

Conclusion

With the S6, VanMoof shows that the brand wants to maintain its presence despite setbacks and is focussing on its core strengths: minimalist design, integrated technology and a consistently urban approach. However, the decision to stick to proven technical solutions seems somewhat conservative — especially in view of new, exciting developments in the e-bike segment. Although it remains to be seen how the durability and suitability for everyday use of the new model will prove in practice, the fact that VanMoof is focussing on this is a step in the right direction.

At first glance, however, it is a bit of a shame that more technical innovations were not utilised straight away — such as modern rear-wheel motors with an integrated automatic gearbox or a low-maintenance belt drive instead of the classic bicycle chain. Nevertheless, the fact that VanMoof is taking a fresh approach and focussing more on functionality and durability is a good sign.

The price for the new model is 3,298 euros. Interested parties can reserve the bike now for a deposit of 150 euros. Delivery is scheduled to start in August. All pre-order customers will also receive a one-year theft protection service at no extra charge. If a bike is reported stolen, VanMoof promises to locate and return it within 14 days — or replace it.
