Having been announced some time ago, the new generation of Hepha Urban, City and Trekking e-bikes is now finally available. Reason enough to take a closer look at the new range. With its Generation 8, Hepha is embarking on an exciting new path, placing a clear focus on reducing weight – without noticeably compromising on performance or everyday practicality.
Slim battery, powerful performance
The most striking change is the switch to a new 600 Wh battery. At first glance, this seems like a step backwards compared to the previous generation, which offered up to 800 Wh. In fact, however, Hepha is pursuing a different approach. The more compact battery pack allows for slimmer frames and more elegant proportions, and contributes significantly to weight reduction. At the same time, the familiar full-power mid-drive motor from Gobao, with a powerful 100 Nm of torque and more, remains on board and continues to provide confident assistance even on steep climbs – we’ve already had the chance to test this powerful motor here in the previous generation of the Hepha City 7 Ultra.
To ensure that the smaller battery doesn’t cause any inconvenience in everyday use, Hepha includes a 6A fast charger as standard. Whilst many competitors still rely on 2A or 4A chargers, this battery can be recharged significantly faster. This ties in with the manufacturer’s so-called Multi Charge Ride concept, which deliberately incorporates shorter charging breaks whilst on the move. However, those who still prefer the greatest possible range can double the capacity to a total of 1,200 Wh with a second 600 Wh battery. At 499 euros, this offer is extremely attractive compared to many significantly smaller range extenders from other manufacturers.
A consistent approach has also been taken to reducing the weight of the other components. Air suspension forks, lighter tyres and, above all, a completely redesigned frame significantly reduce the weight compared with the previous generation. The frame alone has been made nearly 1.5 kilograms lighter. The result of this weight reduction is that the lightest bikes in the new Generation 8 range are set to weigh in at just 21.9 kilograms – whilst still offering all the benefits of a fully equipped everyday e-bike.
One platform for all models
Whether it’s the Urban, City or Trekking – all models in the 8th generation share largely the same technical basis. This includes the powerful mid-drive motor delivering 100 Nm and more, the new removable 600 Wh battery, the 6A fast charger and connectivity to the Hepha app. Added to this are a modern lighting system, hydraulic disc brakes and a MIK HD luggage rack, which is also approved for use with child seats. Another striking feature is the significantly more modern overall frame design, with harmonious transitions and a visibly sleeker silhouette.
Urban, City and Trekking – three series of bikes, each with its own distinct character
The new Hepha Urban 8 series is aimed primarily at commuters and city cyclists looking for an e-bike that is as light and dynamic as possible. Key features include the sporty riding position and the rigid fork, which helps to save weight. Depending on the model, either a chain or belt drive is used, combined with a robust Shimano Nexus 5-speed hub gear system designed specifically for high-performance e-bikes. The top-of-the-range Urban 8 Ultra model also features a clever anti-theft system with an immobiliser and an alarm. Prices start at 2,399 euros.
The new Hepha City 8 series places greater emphasis on everyday comfort. The design features a suspension fork and an upright riding position, as well as a choice between an affordable version with a chain drive and Shimano Nexus 5-speed hub gears, or a higher-spec model with a Gates belt drive. Both models are designed specifically for everyday use in the city. Prices start at 2,899 euros.
Finally, the Hepha Trekking 8 series rounds off the range with particularly versatile touring bikes. It is aimed at cyclists who, as well as their daily commute, are planning longer trips or journeys. Accordingly, these bikes feature derailleur gears, suspension forks and tyres that are slightly better suited to off-road riding. The top-of-the-range model even delivers a torque of 110 Nm. Prices start at 2,699 euros.
Conclusion
With its Generation 8 range, Hepha is consistently refining its e-bikes whilst setting clear priorities. The reduced weight should make a noticeable difference in everyday use – whether riding, carrying or manoeuvring the bike. At the same time, the powerful mid-drive motor remains, whilst the new 600 Wh battery should still be more than adequate for most uses. Thanks to the quick charger supplied as standard, charging times are also significantly shorter than with many competitors. Added to this are the visibly more modern frame design and a well-balanced overall specification.
