The fact that Canyon takes the future of urban mobility seriously was recently impressively demonstrated by the Future Mobility Concept. And with the simultaneously presented and electric urban bikes Precede:ON and Commuter:ON one offers already two attractive model series for 2021.
Now the range will be completed with the new Commuter family for all those who want to be on the move in the city without a motor. Cheaper, easier to transport, no electronics that may require attention — even in the age of e-mobility, classic urban bikes have not lost their justification.
The innovations now include a trapezoidal frame as the second model variant in each case. But the most obvious innovation in the new Commuter is its further perfected design: The new down tube in D-shape harmonizes perfectly with the head tube, as if the pieces of a puzzle nestled seamlessly together. Also cockpit and spacer — 20 mm on all models for a sportier seating position — have been more integrated. The completely redesigned rear frame triangle henceforth offers extended compatibility for side stands and racks, the latter coming specially prepared for Ortlieb’s practical QuickLock QL 3.1 system on all equipped models. Also the receptacles of the perfectly integrated mudguards are designed bike-specific. The slim design of the new Commuter benefits from the cables and lines completely routed through the down tube or the front brake line running through the fork. All models are equipped with disc brakes, for driving and seating comfort should provide the 40mm wide G-One Allround Performance tires from Schwalbe as well as a long saddle extension.
The entry into the new model year marks the Commuter 5 or 5 WMN (with trapezoidal frame) not equipped as a “naked bike” for 999 euros with Shimano Nexus 8 hub gears and their easy-to-use twist grip. This model will be available in the colors Grey (Commuter 5) and Mustard (Commuter 5 WMN), the weight is 11.3 kg.
The Commuter 6 (WMN) uses the same setup for 1,299 euros, but comes with Supernova lighting, Wingee mudguards and a rack as StVZO equipment. The colors are Dark Navy (Commuter 6) or Mustard and Anchor Grey (Commuter 6 WMN), the weight is 13.1 kg.
The Commuter 7 (WMN) for 1,599 euros gives way to the 8-speed hub Shimano Alfine top model with 11 gears. In terms of color, you can choose between Anchor Grey and Mustard (Commuter 7) or Champagne (Commuter 7 WMN), the weight is also 13.1 kg.
Good and consequent at the same time that Canyon now relies consistently on a hub gear and the Gates belt drive for all models mentioned. This combination is largely maintenance-free, quiet and clean at the same time and thus perfect for daily use in the city.
The aforementioned drive with 11-speed Alfine shifting and belt drive also powers the top model Commuter 8, which is the only representative to start the new season unchanged — and thus continues its iconic tradition as a completely integrated design object. Already at the Eurobike 2013 Canyon presented the concept study of this still exceptional Commuter bike, a year later appeared the first production bike, which was also awarded, among others, the “Red Dot Design Award”.
