High-tech at a bargain price?

Just before launch? New information about the B’Twin E-Three 900 longtail cargo bike from Decathlon

That Decathlon is working on new cargo bikes is probably one of the worst-kept secrets in the industry. As early as March 2025, the first images surfaced hinting at new models. In the meantime, the evidence has become much more compelling. A mention at the French cargo bike festival, along with a leaked promotional video on YouTube, suggests that the unveiling of a new longtail bike could be imminent—and even reveals the name of the new model: the B’Twin E-Three 900 Longtail.

More Information

Innovative drive system with automatic shifting

The most exciting detail is likely found at the heart of the bike: Decathlon is relying on the integrated motor-and-gearbox unit called Owuru, as already seen on urban bikes—such as the Decathlon LD940 E, which we previously featured here.

Combining motor and continuously variable automatic transmission: Decathlon’s innovative Owuru motor

The clever bit: the system doesn’t just combine motor and gearing in a single unit—it also enables stepless, fully automatic adjustment of the gear ratio. With this sophisticated high-tech drivetrain, Decathlon has created a genuine unique selling point. In everyday use, this mainly means one thing: fewer manual inputs and more focus on the ride itself. Especially on a cargo bike, which is often used to carry extra weight, this kind of support can deliver a real boost in comfort.

Smart features for everyday use

Beyond the drivetrain, the bike also showcases some thoughtful ideas. In the video footage, a fold-down protective bar—referred to as the Butterfly Kids Bar—on the rear cargo area stands out in particular. This solution is likely to make everyday life much easier for families. Children can get on and off more easily, while still benefiting from the usual level of safety and a stable handhold. It’s a detail that may seem minor at first glance, but in daily use it can offer a noticeable boost in practicality.

Another intriguing feature is compatibility with the so-called B’clip system. This is designed to allow accessories such as baskets, bags or platforms to be attached and swapped quickly without tools. A simple click is all it takes to adapt the bike’s setup to different transport tasks.

To minimise the space required when parking, the bike’s handlebar can be folded by 90 degrees; the pedals can also be folded down.

First tech specs

While the full technical specifications have yet to be officially confirmed, some key details are already emerging. The motor is said to deliver 65 Newton metres of torque, which would be in line with the existing Owuru system. However, for a cargo bike of this size, a more powerful variant would also be conceivable. The battery is expected to offer a capacity of 700 watt-hours and can apparently be removed upwards from the frame. And thanks to a built-in GPS tracker, the bike can also be located via Decathlon’s smartphone app.

When parked, the B’Twin E-Three 900 requires very little space for a cargo bike

The bike features a combination of a 24-inch front wheel and a 20-inch rear wheel, complemented by a suspension fork at the front. It also comes with a centrally mounted double-leg kickstand, an adjustable handlebar, and a hydraulic four-piston braking system from Tektro. Additionally, a small storage compartment can be seen in the area between the seat tube and the rear wheel.

Premium technology at an affordable price?

The reported price of 3,199 euros is drawing particular attention. If confirmed, it would be remarkably affordable for an electric cargo bike with an integrated automatic drivetrain system—and would once again underline Decathlon’s ambition to make innovative technology accessible to a wide audience.

By comparison, the more conventionally equipped B’Twin E-Three 500 costs 2,799 euros—so not that much less—and is currently one of Decathlon’s most attractively priced models.

Will the midtail be coming as well? The shorter variant with a 26-inch rear wheel was also leaked in 2025—but whether it will be released anytime soon remains unknown.

Much suggests that the official unveiling won’t be long in coming. Based on the leaks so far, the B’Twin E-Three 900 Longtail already appears to be in the starting blocks. Whether the slightly shorter Midtail variant will be presented at the same time remains unclear—though it did at least feature in the initial leaks last year.

Anticipation is building—and with it the question of whether Decathlon can truly set a new benchmark in the affordable e-cargo bike segment. Keeping a close eye on Decathlon’s website might well be worth it!
