With its new Woom Explore e, the Austrian kids’ bike experts from Woom are expanding their product range with a new range of e-bikes. Following on from the electrified mountain bike already in the range, this is now the first e-bike for everyday use and adventure specifically for children and teenagers aged 7 to 14.
Available in Woom frame sizes 5 (24 inches) and 6 (26 inches), the bike is aimed at young explorers who have to tackle steep climbs on the way to school, for example, or who like to go on tours with their parents—sometimes over gravel, forest paths or long distances.
Why e-bikes can be useful for children and teenagers
The idea of an e-bike for children regularly causes discussion—and not without reason. On the one hand, e-bikes open up completely new possibilities for children: longer distances, more metres in altitude and joint tours with the family suddenly become realistic without frustration or excessive demands. On family outings in particular, e-bikes even out the differences in performance between parents and children – the fun remains the same for everyone. On the other hand, there are of course also critical voices: Doesn’t the motorised drive reduce movement too much? Will the additional weight affect the riding behaviour? Woom counters these concerns with a well thought-out concept that specifically addresses the needs of children—both in terms of technology and handling.
Technology: Mahle system with clever battery concept
Das Herzstück des neuen Woom Explore e ist das Mahle XS-System. Es besteht aus dem X30-Nabenmotor im Hinterrad mit 45 Nm Drehmoment und dem kompakten, externen Akku eX1 mit 171 Wh Kapazität. Die Batterie kann übrigens bequem per USB-C geladen werden und gelingt so kinderleicht. Der Motor bietet drei Unterstützungsmodi, die Eltern sogar individuell per App einstellen können. So lässt sich die elektrische Unterstützung exakt auf den Einsatzzweck und die Fähigkeiten des Kindes anpassen. Ein weiterer Vorteil: Durch das externe Akkukonzept bleibt das Bike trotz E-Antrieb vergleichsweise leicht und agil – ein klarer Pluspunkt im Vergleich zu anderen Kinder-E-Bikes mit fest integriertem Akku auf dem Markt.
The centrepiece of the new Woom Explore e is the Mahle XS system. It consists of the X30 hub motor in the rear wheel with a torque of 45 Nm and the compact, external eX1 battery with a capacity of 171 Wh. The battery can be conveniently charged via USB-C, making it very easy to charge. The motor offers three support modes, which parents can even set individually via the app. This allows the electric assistance to be customised precisely to the intended use and the child’s abilities. Another advantage: thanks to the external battery concept, the bike remains comparatively light and agile despite the electric drive—a clear plus point compared to other kids’ e-bikes with a permanently integrated battery on the market.
Two models—available now
Besides its electric drive, the Woom Explore e relies on the proven features of the familiar analogue Woom Explore series and includes an 8-speed derailleur, hydraulic disc brakes for reliable deceleration and an adjustable stem and handlebar for perfect adaptation to the respective body size.
