With the Lundi, we have a real classic among urban e-bikes on test: it was the very first bike from the French manufacturer, which was launched back in 2012. Over the years, several revised model generations have followed, but the essential features of the iconic city bike have remained the same. The current top model in our test is the Lundi 27.6, which is equipped with a modern drive system and offers smart features.
Design
Right from the start, the Lundi featured a distinctive design language and the latest generation is no exception. The straight-lined frame tubes with the matching fork make the bike look as if it has been cast from a single mould from every perspective, and the mudguards painted in the frame colour also play their part in this. But even at second glance, the Lundi 27 surprises with many interesting details: for example, the head tube, which is rectangular in shape, merges seamlessly into the fork and also has an integrated headlight. A colourful range of colours is also typical of the model series — although our test bike is rather neutral in light Stone Grey glossy. There is no doubt that the frame is the star of the Lundi 27.
All other components are visually subordinate to this and support the clean overall appearance of the bike with their matt black finish. This even applies to the tyres, which do without the bright reflective stripes. If you want to be compliant on the road, you have to add the spoke reflectors to the photos. Furthermore, the electric drive remains visually unobtrusive: the motor disappears behind the large chain guard, the removable battery is concealed in the down tube and the modern display is harmoniously positioned in the centre of the handlebar.
Speaking of handlebar: thanks to its angular look, it is truly unique and undoubtedly one of the eye-catchers on the Lundi 27.6!
Equipment
Despite its clean look, the Lundi 27.6 makes no compromises when it comes to equipment. In addition to the sturdy metal mudguards, a lighting system is also installed for everyday use, consisting of a headlight integrated at the front and a rear light on the rear mudguard. There is also a frame lock from AXA, a kickstand and a sturdy pannier rack with a load capacity of 27 kg. This can hold two panniers on the side and is compatible with the MIK-HD system, allowing a child seat or shopping basket to be fitted.
The electric drive system comes from Bosch and Moustache relies on a tried and tested mid-motor: the Performance Line is known for its quiet operation and, with a torque of 75 Nm, offers more than enough power for urban use. Power is supplied by the PowerTube battery, which is available with either 500 Wh or 625 Wh capacity. The drive is controlled via the LED Remote on the handlebars, while visual feedback is provided by the 2.8’ colour display, which shows all relevant information about the ride in an easy-to-read format. Not visible from the outside is the ConnectModule, which gives the Lundi 27.6 smart capabilities: the bike can be located via smartphone thanks to the GPS tracker, and the module also integrates an alarm system. If the locked bike is moved, an acoustic alarm is triggered and a push message is sent to the smartphone. Thanks to smartphone connectivity, the smart system also offers the option of navigation, for which the large display is definitely an advantage.
The mechanical drive consists of the continuously variable hub gear from Enviolo and the modern belt drive from Gates. The Enviolo TR hub installed here offers a gear range of 380% and, together with the belt drive, is considered to be particularly clean, quiet and low-maintenance. Perhaps the Lundi 27.6 requires even less maintenance than other bikes, as it has an eccentric pulley to keep the belt at the right tension at all times.
Certainly in favour of the design, Moustache has dispensed with a suspension fork at the front of the Lundi — and yet comfort is not neglected: on the one hand, there are very voluminous Super Moto-X tyres with a width of 60 mm from Schwalbe, and on the other a suspension seat post with 40 mm suspension travel.
Operation
The Smart System from Bosch is known for its coherent and simple operating concept, which also comes into its own on the Lundi 27.6. The various riding modes can be selected using the LED Remote, and we would once again like to praise the Auto mode: its automatic adjustment of the motor’s support works so well that you can largely do without manually switching riding modes. The large display in the centre of the handlebars is easy to read and can be easily removed when the bike is parked. This provides additional theft protection, as the electric drive can only be activated with the display in place.
The ability to easily remove the battery for charging is commendable. The cover of the battery compartment can be removed effortlessly and snaps back into place precisely when inserted. It’s just a shame that the key has to be in the battery lock to insert the battery. Of course, you can also charge the bike with the battery inserted — there is a charging socket above the motor for this purpose.
It is also easy to operate the Enviolo transmission, which is controlled manually using the twist grip. A small bicycle icon in the display of the twist grip clearly illustrates the selected gear ratio: with a short gear ratio, it is travelling uphill, with a long gear ratio, it is travelling on flat terrain. Once again, however, it has to be said that Enviolo could definitely improve the way the twist grip works — it does react a little stiffly, spongily and with a long travel. However, it fulfils its actual function in everyday use without any problems, so we simply enjoy the other advantages of the Enviolo: for example, the ability to shift gears even when stationary, which is a great advantage, especially when frequently stopping at traffic lights in the city!
Moustache has also paid attention to ease of use in everyday life in other areas: for example, the kickstand is mounted far back and therefore cannot collide with the cranks when manoeuvring. Panniers can be easily and securely attached to the pannier rack thanks to the QL3 attachment. And MIK-compatible seats or baskets can be attached to the top of the carrier with a simple click. So it’s all pretty easy!
Riding impressions
What the look of the bike already suggests is confirmed by the first test ride on the Lundi 27: the riding position is super upright and comfortable! The handlebars, which are pulled far back with their ergonomically shaped grips, also contribute significantly to this, allowing a very comfortable grip position.
The interplay between the frame geometry and handlebars also ensures that the Lundi 27 is suitable for people between 1.57 and 1.90 metres despite its one-size-fits-all design. This is because, unlike a sporty and stretched posture, such a comfortable and upright riding position is more tolerant of different body sizes.
Once on the bike, its relaxed characteristics become apparent: the mechanical drive with the Enviolo gearbox and belt drive is just as quiet as the electric one — but also offers enough power to stay comfortably in the saddle on climbs. In the aforementioned Auto mode, the motor offers the right support in almost all situations, which, in combination with the easy-to-operate shifting, ensures stress-free progress. This makes riding the Lundi 27.6 even more enjoyable!
The rather high weight of the bike, we weighed the test bike ready to ride at 28.5 kg, is not noticeable during the ride — especially as the Lundi 27 is not designed for chasing through the city at racing speed anyway. Instead, the bike is always easy to control on the road and conveys a high feeling of safety thanks to its stable design. Just as reliable is the braking system with 180 mm front brake discs, which are appropriately sized for the total weight of 150 kg.
It is not only on cobblestones that you learn to appreciate the suspension seat post, which effectively smoothes out the unevenness of the ground. Together with the wide tyres, which are best ridden with rather low air pressure, the Lundi 27 is very comfortable to glide along on. The saddle also offers comfort, but a slightly slimmer and more modern model would certainly have suited the bike better.
The only real point of criticism is the headlight, whose field of light is too narrow and too dark in absolute darkness — especially as the headlight does not steer with the front wheel due to its design. However, if you only ride the Lundi 27 on illuminated roads in urban areas, you should have no problem with this.
Conclusion
With its Lundi 27.6, Moustache has successfully refreshed its classic for the future: technologically, the bike is at the cutting edge with a smart drive system, belt drive and continuously variable transmission. The equipment is comprehensive, well thought-out, maintenance-free and easy to handle — making the bike a lot of fun to ride every day. And then, of course, there is the striking design, which makes the Lundi 27 stand out from the crowd of ordinary step-through bikes.
All in all, there are many positive features, which are also reflected in the price: the Lundi 27.6 starts at 4,399 euros with the 500 Wh battery, while the 625 Wh version of our test bike costs a further 200 euros extra. This certainly doesn’t make the bike a bargain, but on the other hand it leaves nothing to be desired!
