Even better and cheaper: the new urban bikes X.2 and Y.2 from discounter Lidl

Last May, discounter Lidl caused a stir with its own urban bike: the Urban Bike X and Urban Bike Y models with diamond frame and step-through comfort frame were not only attractive in price, but also scored points for their components.

Lidl’s Urban Bikes are available in two frame shapes

This is exactly where Lidl comes in with the second generation of these bikes for 2024, which are now called Urban Bike X.2 and Urban Bike Y.2. The differences are manageable at first glance, but are certainly welcome: the 21 kg bikes are now equipped with a pannier rack as standard, and the rear light of the fixed lighting system is now even cleanly integrated into the mudguard. However, there are now significantly more options, especially when it comes to the choice of colors:

  • The new Urban Bike X.2 with high top tube is now available in All Black and Olive Green
  • The new Urban Bike Y.2 with a low-entry comfort frame is also available in All Black, Cream White and Berry Blush

High-quality electric drive system

There are more innovations in terms of the technology installed, although the basics remain the same: the MIVICE M080 has a powerful hub motor installed in the rear wheel, which offers up to 45 Nm of torque. Thanks to the integrated torque sensor, a particularly natural riding style is made possible — assistance is provided depending on how hard you pedal. We have published a detailed article on this here.

The electric drive is now controlled via a compact button with LED display in the top tube of the frame, where you can now switch between three different riding modes. A completely new feature is the boost button, which activates the motor’s full power for up to 20 seconds at the push of a button. The bike’s battery, on the other hand, is an old acquaintance, which is still installed in the seat post and can therefore also be removed, as well as offering a capacity of 360 Wh.

Better components

The Lidl Urban Bike also continues to come without gears, but instead offers a clean and largely maintenance-free belt drive. However, the branded product from Gates is now used here, whereas previously a non-name belt was used. There are also changes elsewhere: the hydraulic disc brakes are now from Shimano, type MT200, and the tires are now 50 mm wide Schwalbe Big Ben tires in 27.5″ format. Previously, components from Tektro and Kenda were used here.

In addition to the aforementioned rear light in the mudguard — with brake light function — a second rear light is also installed under the saddle; the Sate-lite C13 Pure front headlight complies with german StVZO regulations and offers an illumination level of 80 lux. The lighting system is powered by the e-bike’s main battery, so there is no need to charge separate components. And another practical detail: a smartphone holder from SP Connect from the new SPC+ system is already installed on the comfortably curved handlebars!

Cheap price

Typical for the discounter is of course the attractive price-performance ratio, which also applies to the new bikes: the regular price for the two new models is said to be 1,699 euros, which is exactly the same price as the predecessors – in view of the improved equipment, the bikes have thus become even cheaper! But the best thing is: Lidl has reduced the price for all variants by 400 euros for the launch – so the Urban Bike X.2 and the Urban Bike Y.2 can currently be ordered directly here in the online store for just 1,299 euros!
