The Fazua Ride 60 was unveiled in 2022 with high expectations – a compact, quiet and efficient e-drive that seemed ideal for slim urban bikes. The 2023 season saw the launch of promising models from Canyon, Riese & Müller and Velo de Ville, which incorporated the Munich-based drive into stylish city bikes. In our review of the Riese & Müller UBN Five, the Fazua drive impressed us with its successful combination of dynamics, smoothness and handling.
That made it all the more regrettable that no other urban e-bike with a Fazua drive system came onto the market for a long time afterwards. Instead, Bosch pushed ahead with its SX drive system and caused a veritable flood of new urban models. Fazua seemed to have been almost forgotten – until now. With the new Gazelle Cayo, the Ride60 is making an impressive comeback – in a package that is as clear-cut as it is urban.
Sleek, smart and stylish: the new Gazelle Cayo
The Cayo impresses at first glance with its minimalist design and straight lines. The frame has a modern and slightly angular look, the down tube is slim and houses the 430 Wh battery, which can be removed for charging – practical for everyday city life. The Ride 60 motor delivers 60 Nm of torque, which is more than enough for everyday use. It is combined with the low-maintenance Gates Carbon Drive belt drive.
Typical Fazua: the controls remain minimalist. An inconspicuous controller on the handlebars and a small LED unit with a USB port on the top tube display the most important information, such as riding mode and battery capacity, while the app on your smartphone takes care of everything else. The system in the Cayo is complemented by an integrated GPS tracker, which allows you to locate the bike at any time via the app.
Made for the city
Designed for urban use, Gazelle equips the bike ex works with integrated lighting and mudguards. A rear luggage rack and an additional front luggage rack are also available as options. 50 mm wide tyres in 27.5-inch format ensure sufficient comfort in the city.
When it comes to mechanical drive systems, there are two options to choose from: the Cayo C1, a purist single-speed model, and the Cayo C310 with continuously variable Enviolo hub gears. However, at 21.6 and 24.2 kilograms respectively, both models are relatively heavy – especially since, according to the manufacturer, this does not include the weight of the battery.
The Gazelle Cayo is available in four frame sizes and two versions – as a diamond frame with sporty geometry or as a trapezoidal frame with lower step-through. Prices start at 3,599 euros for the single-speed C1 version and 3,999 euros for the C310 with Enviolos stepless gear hub.
