Is the saving worth it?

Without gears, but more affordable: the smart e-bike from Veloretti gets a single-speed version

With its Electric Two series, Veloretti from the Netherlands has been offering a real smart bike with an extremely attractive design for some time now – we have already featured the bike in detail in our test here. Thanks to integrated GPS tracking, extensive app connectivity and the display integrated into the stem, the bike offers modern features — combined with equipment suitable for everyday use such as the cool, integrated lighting and sturdy mudguards.

The electric drive is a mid-motor from Bafang, which offers 65 Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the rear wheel via a clean and largely maintenance-free belt drive from Gates, which is also a plus point in everyday use. The same applies to the battery with a capacity of 540 Wh, which can be easily removed for charging.

Until now, the bikes in the Electric Two series were exclusively available with Enviolo’s continuously variable automatic transmission — this automatically adjusts the gear ratio while riding and thus ensures the smoothest possible ride, whether uphill or downhill. This variant will be given the Pro suffix with immediate effect, while a Lite variant will be added at the same time.

With the new Electric Two Lite, a more cost-effective alternative is being launched on the market that is designed as a singlespeed — i.e. without any gears. We have already been able to test the fact that such a drive works without any problems on flat terrain on countless other urban bikes. You can also expect comparable performance from the Veloretti, especially as the powerful mid-drive motor is still used. In addition to the lack of gears, there is only one other thing that those interested will have to do without: the brake light function has been removed from the rear light, which is a shame — especially as the cost of this extra feature is certainly not high. But: the single-speed version is around 3 kg lighter than its counterpart with Envillo gears.

However, you have to consider whether the lack of automatic transmission is worth the relatively small price saving: at 2,999 euros, the Pro version of the Electric Two has been reduced anyway — but the new Lite model is 400 euros cheaper at 2,599 euros. As before, all models offer a choice between the Ace Two, the version with a classic diamond frame and high top tube, and the Ivy Two with a comfort frame in a trapezoidal shape.
