Bicycle locks are designed to protect against theft, but in everyday use they are often anything but convenient. The Dutch company TMD Locks now wants to change that and is launching the TMD Chain Lock, a chain lock designed to combine security with ease of use. What makes it special: according to the manufacturer, it is the first bike lock to combine keyless Bluetooth operation, an integrated alarm and ART 2 certification in a single product. Security is not new territory for TMD: the company originally comes from the field of ATM security and is now applying its expertise to bicycles and e-bikes.

The smartphone replaces the key
The lock is designed to automatically recognise its owner’s smartphone via Bluetooth; to unlock it, simply press a button on the lock itself. Handy: the accompanying app also allows you to grant access rights to up to five other people. This means, for example, that a bike can easily be shared by several people without the need for multiple physical keys. In addition, the app saves the bike’s last known location and provides information on the battery charge level. And if the smartphone ever runs out of power, the lock can be opened directly on the device using a unique emergency code.

Combining alarm systems and lightweight construction
In addition to its digital operation, TMD has opted for a comparatively lightweight design. This is made possible by a multi-layered construction. The outer shell consists of a double-braided technical polyester fabric, which is designed to make the lock particularly robust in everyday use. Underneath, reinforcements made from high-performance fibres are used, which are characterised by their high resistance to cuts and heat. Inside is a specially hardened manganese steel chain. It is designed to offer effective protection against break-in attempts, whilst remaining comparatively flexible and lightweight. Depending on the model, the lock weighs between 1.3 and 2.1 kilograms.

An integrated alarm provides additional security. If the lock detects movement or attempts to tamper with it, a 100-decibel siren is activated. Added to this is ART 2 certification, which is recognised as a security standard for bicycle locks, particularly in the Netherlands. Many insurance companies require such certification for theft protection or expressly recommend it. As a result, the TMD Chain Lock is aimed not only at users who value convenience, but also at owners of high-quality e-bikes who want to secure their bikes as effectively as possible.
Designed for everyday use
The TMD Chain Lock is available in three lengths ranging from 70 to 160 centimetres and weighs between 1.3 and 2.1 kilograms, depending on the model. According to the manufacturer, the built-in battery is designed to last up to nine months. When it runs out, the lock can be fully recharged in around two hours. Thanks to IP57 certification, the system is also protected against dust and water, making it suitable for year-round everyday use. You can get the TMD Chain Lock in black, beige and navy blue — prices start at 229 euros; the smart lock is available from selected premium e-bike dealers and directly here in the TMD online shop.
