Bikepacking and a new form of bike travel made its way over to Europe in 2016. This type of cycling originally comes from the US, where this trend experienced an unexpected boom with the emergence of a new type of bike: the gravel bike. The various expressions and interpretations of this bike and discipline are hallmarks of the establishment of the trend. Bikepacking is also receiving an additional boost due to the Corona Pandemic.

Being on the move has changed as long-distance travel was, and still is, hardly possible. Many have rediscovered their homeland, often by bike, and very often in bikepacking mode. These are small escapes from everyday life or escape routes if you will. With only the bare essentials packed and stored on the bike, one can leave everyday behind and get immersed in nature. Even for a short amount of time, explains Martin Esslinger, Managing Director of the Heilsbronn-based bag specialist, Ortlieb.

Currently, the demand is immense. Despite significantly increased capacities at the Germany-based production facilities, the effort made to meet the demand is enormous. “More and more outdoor enthusiasts are using micro-adventures for a short vacation by bike, boat or even on foot,” says Esslinger.

In keeping with this trend, the Franconian bike bag experts, Ortlieb, have launched their latest product of the bikepacking series: the Handlebar-Pack QR (Quick Release). Waterproof and made in Germany, this innovative bag comes with a patented mounting system, suitable for daily use and adventures alike.

The new fastening system, named the Bar-Lock, enables the waterproof Handlebar-Pack QR to be attached or removed in minimal time. Off the bike and in hand within seconds, the bag can now be easily taken along during a stopover or when the end-destination is reached. When on riding, the Bar-Lock rope attachment ensures that this bikepacking bag sits absolutely stable on the handlebars, even on rougher terrain. The handlebar bag has an 11-liter volume, weighs just 530 grams, and is loaded from above. And, thanks to its narrow 32-centimeter design, the bag fits easily in between drop bars. Lateral outer pockets allow small parts or snacks to be stowed away and accessed while riding. The optional accessory Handlebar-Pack QR Inner Pocket helps to keep things tidy and creates designated space for storing important items such as cash, credit cards or your mobile phone.
