The most universal Brompton? New G-Line with larger frame and all-road tyres

Today, Brompton introduces the brand’s biggest innovation in 50 years: the G Line, the first Brompton 20-inch folding bike.

In 1975, developer Andrew Ritchie set new standards by inventing a bike that could be folded up small — and thus made a new way of travelling possible. The Brompton changed the way people travelled around the city all over the world. With the G Line, Brompton now wants to write mobility history again — 50 years after the most compact folding bike first rolled onto the streets. The bikes in the new line are designed to offer the riding experience and comfort of a ‘big’ bike while retaining the functionality and versatility of the characteristic folding mechanism.

With a completely new geometry, brand-new 20-inch wheels and tubeless-ready Schwalbe G-One tyres specially developed for Brompton, the G Line is Brompton’s latest coup. It is designed to combine outstanding comfort and a safe, balanced ride with the iconic folding mechanism. When folded, the bike measures just 69 x 73 x 42 cm.

With tyres big enough for any adventure and small enough to fold the bike compactly, the G Line is the first Brompton with disc brakes, developed for any terrain and any weather. The bikes are also available with pannier rack, mudguards and lights for everyday use.

The ‘analogue’ G Line has an 8-speed Alfine hub gear installed in the rear wheel. The gears are neatly organised inside the hub and reliably protected from water, dirt and knocks.

The Electric G Line, on the other hand, comes with a 4-speed gearbox. Here, the electric drive is realised via a compact hub motor in the rear wheel and a battery with 345 Wh capacity in a pretty front bag. The electric drive is combined with a 4-speed derailleur gear system — this is the first time a rear-wheel motor has been used, while the previous Brompton e-bikes were equipped with a front-wheel motor.

It is only logical that with a larger frame and larger tyres, the weight also increases: the analogue G Line starts at 13.9 kg, with luggage rack and mudguards it should be 14.8 kg. And the electric version will weigh 19.5 kg including battery. All new models will be available in three sizes, making the bikes suitable for riders between 152 and 198 cm tall.

Prices for the G Line range from 2,849 to 3,079 euros, depending on the equipment, while the Electric G Line costs 3,999 euros. All bikes will be available from 7 October 2024.
