Decathlon BTWIN LD 940E: Updated e-bike with automatic transmission

With introducing the new BTWIN LD 940E Automatic, Decathlon unveils the consistent further development of its urban e-bike with a fully automatic drive system. The manufacturer first launched the so-called Owuru motor on the market back in 2023 with the LD 920E — a combination of a powerful mid-motor and continuously variable automatic transmission in a closed system. The special thing about it is that there is no need to change gear at all, as the system adjusts the transmission ratio independently and depending on the situation.

In our review of the LD 920E, this drive system impressed us with its high level of riding comfort, powerful support and overall quiet operating noise. However, a slightly perceptible rattling in the drivetrain did not go unnoticed — Decathlon has now revised this detail, among others, in the successor model.

New frame for greater comfort

The LD 940E comes exclusively with a revised step-through frame, which makes it particularly easy to get on and off the bike. The previously available diamond and trapezoid frames of the predecessor are no longer in the range. At the same time, the range of sizes has been adjusted: The new model is available in two sizes, S/M and L/XL.

Decathlon has also revised the ergonomics. A new handlebar that is curved more towards the rear ensures a more upright riding position. The cockpit also retains familiar features such as a USB-C port and the integrated colour display.

Automatic transmission with a wider gear ratio range

The tried-and-tested joystick control element on the handlebars can still be used to set the three riding modes and the desired cadence, which the system uses to automatically adjust the gear ratio. The continuously variable transmission now offers an extended gear range of 310% (previously 265%), making the bike more suitable for steeper climbs. This is supported by the strong mid-motor with its 65 Nm of torque and the large 694 Wh battery.

Compared to the previous model, Decathlon has further optimised the noise development of the drive. A short test ride at Eurobike showed that the previously noticeable rattling noise has been significantly minimised!

App connectivity and GPS tracking

As with the LD 920E, the new model also has an integrated GPS tracker for localisation. This system is now supplemented by a connection to the Decathlon Mobility App, which enables the drive to be locked via smartphone, among other things. The app also offers functions such as spare parts references, tutorials and the option to book workshop appointments digitally.

Conclusion

With the BTWIN LD 940E Automatic, Decathlon offers a technically revised e-bike that is primarily aimed at urban commuters who value a high level of comfort and the simplest possible operation. The combination of continuously variable automatic transmission, quiet mid-motor and the more upright seating position ensures a relaxed riding experience – especially in city traffic.

There is also a comprehensive range of features for everyday use, including permanently mounted mudguards, an integrated lighting system, a sturdy luggage rack and a permanently installed GPS tracker for additional safety. The new Decathlon Mobility app also allows functions such as localisation and theft protection to be used conveniently via smartphone.

The bike can be ordered directly here via the Decathlon website at a price of 2,799 euros — with the option of home delivery or collection from a nearby Decathlon shop. Although this makes it around 300 euros more expensive than its predecessor, it offers a successful update with useful new features!
