An important step towards sustainable mobility was taken in Zurich today: the spectacular city tunnel for cyclists was officially opened. The tunnel, which is around 440 metres long, runs under the main railway station and creates a direct, intersection-free connection between two important parts of the city — on which not only cyclists can travel safely, quickly and protected from the weather.
This is because all types of bicycles are permitted in the new city tunnel, including regular Pedelecs and fast S-Pedelecs that are popular in Switzerland. E-mopeds, electric light motor vehicles and small motorbikes with electric drive are also permitted in the city tunnel. There will be a speed limit of 20 km/h for all vehicles.

The conversion of the tunnel, which was previously planned for cars, into a cycle tunnel is a key element of the city’s cycling strategy. The new connection should provide enormous relief, especially during rush hour — not only for cycle traffic, but also for the public space above ground.
Another highlight of the new tunnel is the modern bicycle parking facility with 1,240 parking spaces, which is located directly at the tunnel entrance. The facility is well-lit, video-monitored and also suitable for cargo bikes — an important contribution to promoting everyday urban cycling.
In addition to functional aspects, great importance was also attached to design: The tunnel was designed to be bright and inviting, with a continuous LED light strip, artistic elements and clear signage. This should make it not only safe, but also attractive for all users. With this CHF 38.6 million project, Zurich is sending out a strong signal in favour of the traffic turnaround and demonstrating how previously car-friendly infrastructure can be repurposed for the future.
